Alright, not sure how many of you have heard about the illegal strike going in BC. But here is an Opinionated column on what has been happening.

BC Teacher's Strike

One thing stands out to me, the Average top salary and with the teacher's wanting a 15% pay raise.

Errr, I have no sympathy for that. I work in the private sector and with the high oil prices, all of the employees still did not receive an average 15% wage increase. So why should teachers?

However their other 2 points that they're striking about is valid. Class sizes and the composition of the class.

Man, I should work for the public sector....

The strike does piss me off. 15% raise? what does that hvae to do with class size and funding for special need children? load of_____.

I hope someone will finally do the Margaret Thatcher thing to the bloody unions in Canada.

as for the "less emotional" you? I don't think being "bipolar" is a virtue, and I guess that's not what you have to worry about. I think being honest about our feelings and being responsible for them by keeping them in it's right proportion IS a virtue. Supressing or repressing them is not.

And yes, good food still gets me happy happy happy...

and Emeril and his BAM ticks me off...

so much for now.

I don't know the situation in BC, but I do know that being a teacher isn't an easy job. It's a little ironic, according to a poll taken which I have no resource on, the majority of teachers hate conflict, and in this line of work, conflict comes every day.

Sure, I know, everyone has their bad days, but try dealing with 40 kids an hour, with angry parents at the end demanding why their children's grades aren't up to par.

As for the 15% increase, maybe they're just staking it high, in hopes that during the negotiations, they'll simply get something?

And to comment on the your emotions, I've always known you as a pretty solid character. But I'm hesitant to comment further because I still haven't cleared my thoughts on it :P

On one side, I say, if that's who you are, than you should be content with that. If people think less of you for your personality, then they can go screw themselves. But if you want to change, I certainly believe there is no shame in that.

However, on the other hand, my other brain says: Don't be someone your not. So why would one want to change their personality?

In any case, I agree with the comment above when he/she says:

I think being honest about our feelings and being responsible for them by keeping them in it's right proportion IS a virtue. Supressing or repressing them is not.

However, where is that balance? Where do we draw the line, when it becomes being responsible for our emotions, and being suppressive to our emotions?

No job is easy. Heck, I feel most for nurses/admin and other public service workers. They work hard night in and night out.

The pressure on teachers are unresonable, especially with hightened scrutiny by Parents. Back when I was in school, not only did we walk uphill both ways to school, we got in trouble if we didn't do well in school, not the teacher.

But yes part of negotiations is to aim high. Although if that is their strategy I do believe that they went TOO high and has now garnered bad press.

Yes, I guess everything in moderation. Kind of reminds me of that one Seinfield episode of "Senerinity now!!". All that supressing of emotions leads to massive explosion of some sort.
